On a GLP-1 medication many people wake up with no appetite at all. Skipping breakfast is tempting, but it makes the day's protein much harder to reach. The answer is a small breakfast that is mostly protein.
Why protein at breakfast matters
Most of the weight lost on GLP-1 medications is fat, but some is lean mass. In the STEP 1 trial of semaglutide, about two-fifths of the weight lost on body scans was lean mass, and that figure includes water and organ tissue, not only muscle. Eating enough protein and doing some strength training are the two habits expert groups recommend to protect it.
Spreading protein across the day is easier than catching up at dinner. A breakfast with 15 to 30 g gives you a head start.

Tips for low-appetite mornings
- Eat the protein part first and stop when you feel full. You can finish the rest mid-morning.
- Drinkable protein counts. Kefir, milk and smoothies are often easier than food early in the day.
- Cook once for the week. Egg cups and overnight oats keep for 3 to 4 days in the fridge.
- Choose cool, plain foods if mornings bring nausea.
The bottom line
A small breakfast built around eggs, dairy, tofu or fish makes the rest of the day easier. Aim for 15 to 30 g and keep the plate small.
